Silver Fir Needle

Silver Fir Needle - Abies alba

This small coniferous tree with its pyramidal shape and silvery white bark is grown mainly for lumber and for Christmas trees. It is native to the mountains of northern Europe and is cultivated mainly in Switzerland, Poland, Germany, France and Austria. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the twigs and needles. The essential oil is mainly used for respiratory complaints, fever, muscular aches and pains and rheumatic pain.

On a side note, there are some interesting facts regarding the use of evergreens during this time of year. In the pagan tradition, boughs of evergreen trees were cut in December, and then moved into the home or temple and decorated to recognize the winter solstice. The actual Christmas tree tradition dates back to Western Germany in the 16th century; these trees were called "Paradeisbaum" (paradise trees). It is believed that German immigrants brought the Christmas tree to America around 1700. Among the general population the Christmas tree became a popular tradition around the 1850’s.

This is general information regarding Silver Fir Needle essential oil. We encourage you to learn more about this oil through research and see how it can benefit your life. You can purchase essential oils through FrogWorks. (Essential oils are not on our website - please call or email) Thanks! - Soon our essential oils will be available through our on-line shopping cart.

Winter Solstice

This year the winter solstice is celebrated on December 22nd. In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice represents the return of the sun. On this day, the evening hours are longest. The ancients noticed that the life-giving sun sank lower and lower in the sky and people feared it would eventually disappear and leave them in permanent darkness and extreme cold. On the date of the winter solstice, the ancients observed that the sun stopped (solstice means “standing still sun”) and after this date the sun began to rise and strengthen. This gave our ancestors much to celebrate, for the return of the warm season was near.

Many religious traditions observe this time of year with their own unique celebrations. This season is associated with the concept of birth, death and rebirth. All the religious holy days that are celebrated during this time recognize these natural cycles. Now is a wonderful time to reflect, find time for family and friends - and like the return of the sun - to begin to manifest your dreams for the new year.
