Basil - Ocimum basilcum or Ocimum sanctum

While harvesting my Sweet Basil to make my winter supply of pesto, it occurred to me that this would be a great plant to write about for the fall season. Two of my favorite species of basil are Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) and Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilcum).

“True” Sweet Basil I primarily use as an essential oil or as a culinary herb. The essential oil is colorless or pale yellow with a beautiful sweet and spicy fragrance. Sweet Basil’s essential oil is a wonderful nerve tonic, clears the mind, helps with depression, colds, flu, circulation and sinusitis and much more. (And Sweet Basil pesto tastes great on pasta!)

Holy Basil, also known as Tulsi, has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. In India this plant is considered very sacred. “Tulsi is considered to be an adaptogen, balancing different processes in the body, and helpful for adapting to stress. Marked by its strong aroma and astringent taste, it is regarded in Ayurveda as a kind of "elixir of life" and believed to promote longevity.” -

Tulsi’s extracts are used in ayurvedic remedies for common colds, headaches, stomach disorders, inflammation and more. I primarily use the dried herb as a tea, especially when I need to relax, which is something we should all think about this autumn season. Many varieties of tulsi tea are available in health food stores, if you would like to give this ancient healing remedy a try.

This is general information regarding Basil – Ocimum basilcum or Ocimum sanctum. We encourage you to learn more about these plants through research and see how they can benefit your life. You can purchase essential oils through FrogWorks. (Essential oils are not on our website - they will be soon - please call or email to place an order or to receive our essential oil retail list.)

Four Winds Blend

Four Winds Blend (kit):

The Four Winds blends were created from a personal desire for guidance from the plant world on my journey through the “circle of life.” I developed these blends out of a deep respect for Native American teachings. With great admiration for these teachings, I share these four blends with you to use on your personal journey through the “circle of life.”

To explore the meaning of the Four Winds is to learn the symbolic meaning of the circle, the number four and the directions. The circle represents the universal symbol of wholeness. The “Circle of Life” moves from birth to old age to death to new life.

Each Wind represents an aspect of life you may be experience or heading towards. For example, the east, where the sun rises, represents spiritual renewal, the birth of new ideas, and overcoming obstacles in life. The south, where the light shines, represents renewal and teaches us about our destiny. It inspires us to release resentment, stubbornness, obstacles and confusion. The west, where the sun sets, represents introspection, cleansing and the dream world. The north, home of the winter season, represents purification and strength.

There are four separate blends to represent each of the Four Winds. Each one has been created with quality essential oils to assist you on your journey through the circle of life.

For more information on these blends, please visit our website or request the handout via email or phone 877.973.8848.
