Frankincense (Boswellia carteri)

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) is a tree in the genus Boswellia in the Burseraceae family from which Frankincense, a resinous dried sap, is harvested. It is a deciduous tree that can grow 6 to 26 feet tall. It has pinnate leaves and small white to pale pink flowers, producing a balsamic oleo gum resin called Frankincense. The tree is slashed, called striping, allowing the resin to bleed out and harden. These hardened resins or tears are then collected, sorted for quality, and steam-distilled, resulting in Frankincense essential oil. It grows wild throughout northeast Africa, but the resin is mainly produced in Somalia, Ethiopia, China, and Saudi Arabia.

Frankincense’s pale yellow essential oil exudes a rich, warm, sweet balsamic aroma. Suggested uses are for treating blemishes, dry and aging skin, scars, wounds and wrinkles. It has been reported to help with asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, coughs and laryngitis. It is noted to relieve anxiety, nervous tension and stress-related conditions. Inhaling this essential oil makes me take a deep breath, and after a few more inhalations, my breathing slows down and becomes more profound, helping me relax.

I find animals who suffer from anxiety and fear will frequently choose Frankincense. I have witnessed panicked horses with rapid breathing calm down after inhaling it. Many of my human and animal clients get much relief from Frankincense for their anxiety and nervous tension, myself included.

Frankincense is high on my list of essential oils to work with, and this is why it is one of the main essential oils in these FrogWorks blends: Garth’s Canine Sneezing Remedy, Golden Cloak, Merlin’s Magic Calming Potion and Peace Blend.

Other reported properties of Frankincense are anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, bactericidal, carminative, cicatrisant, emmenagogue, expectorant, sedative, tonic and vulnerary. These qualities make this essential oil a good choice for the immune, respiratory and nervous systems.

The four main chemical constituents of Frankincense are pinene, phellandrene, limonene and myrcene. Note that the chemistry of plants can change every year due to growing practices, weather influences and climate change.Comes in a 5ml-dropper bottle.
