Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)

This essential oil produced from steam distillation of the roots and rootlets is my go-to oil for calm. The animals love this oil as much as I do.

Its tranquil, calming and grounding properties help soothe irritability, anger and hysteria. It also settles the nerves. With its sweet, smokey, and slightly floral scent, this rich amber-colored oil helps to ground those who feel out of balance. For me, it balances the central nervous system, instills a more centered feeling, and enables you to relax. It is also beneficial for mental and physical exhaustion. I have read that Vetiver revitalizes the body by fortifying the red blood corpuscles, which are crucial in transporting oxygen to all system parts. Increased blood flow could alleviate muscular aches and pains, and Vetiver is said to be helpful in cases of rheumatism and arthritis. It is also beneficial in cases of insomnia. It restores, centers, and reconnects us, closing "the gap between spirit and matter," states Gabriel Mojay in his book "Aromatherapy For Healing The Spirit" January 1996.
